The Invisible Energy Drain
Have you ever ended a coaching session feeling completely drained, even though your client walked away feeling energized and transformed?
As coaches, healers, and therapists, we take pride in our ability to hold space, deeply listen, and be fully present. But what happens when holding that space starts to feel heavy—or even overwhelming?
The truth is, burnout doesn’t just come from doing too much—it often comes from giving too much. While many of us have been taught to set intellectual boundaries (like managing time or saying no), few have learned to create energetic and embodied boundaries that protect our well-being.
In this post, we’ll explore how to protect your energy, avoid emotional burnout, and hold space for others without depleting yourself.
You'll learn science-backed insights and practical, embodied techniques that you can start using today.
Empathy Fatigue: The Hidden Cost of Holding Space
Energetic Boundaries: The Invisible Exchange
Beyond psychology, energetic boundaries play a crucial role. Research in somatic psychology suggests that we constantly exchange subtle energy with others. If you’ve ever felt drained after an intense session, this may be due to energetic entanglement—where you absorb a client’s emotional state without realizing it.
Intellectual vs. Embodied Boundaries: What’s the Difference?
Many coaches focus on intellectual boundaries—like setting session limits, defining client expectations, or managing schedules. But these are only part of the picture.
- Intellectual Boundaries protect your schedule and expectations.
- Embodied Boundaries protect your energy and emotional well-being.
You might have the perfect schedule, but if you’re absorbing your clients' emotions or overextending your energy, burnout can still creep in.
Tools for Setting Sacred, Embodied Boundaries
Pre-Session Grounding: The Energetic Shield
Before a session, take 2-3 minutes to ground yourself and create a protective boundary.
Practice: The Root & Shield Visualization
- Ground – Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Imagine roots growing from your feet, anchoring you deeply into the earth.
- Shield – Visualize a soft, glowing light around your body like a protective bubble. This light allows you to stay present without absorbing others’ emotions.
- Set an Intention – Silently affirm, “I am here to guide and hold space, while staying rooted in my own energy.”

🔬 Science Connection: Grounding techniques stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and enhancing emotional regulation.
During-Session Check-Ins: Staying in Your Lane
Even with a strong pre-session practice, energy can shift during intense moments. Here’s how to stay centered.
Practice: The Somatic Anchor
When you feel overwhelmed or emotionally entangled, try this:
- Body Scan – Notice physical sensations (tight shoulders, shallow breath?).
- Anchor – Press your feet into the ground or gently place a hand on your heart.
- Breathe – Take three slow, deep breaths, extending the exhale.
🔬 Science Connection: Breathwork activates the vagus nerve, promoting emotional balance and a sense of safety.
Post-Session Energy Clearing: The Release Ritual
Just like tidying your physical workspace, clearing your energetic space is essential.
Practice: The Cut & Clear Ritual
- Shake It Off – Stand and gently shake out your hands, arms, and legs. This helps discharge residual energy.
- Breath Sweep – With each exhale, imagine releasing any emotional residue, letting it dissolve into the earth.
- Water Reset – Wash your hands or splash cold water on your face. This signals a fresh start to your nervous system.
🔬 Science Connection: Somatic movement and breath practices lower cortisol levels and promote nervous system regulation.
Creating Sustainable Practices: Boundaries Beyond the Session
Boundaries aren’t just for session time—they need to be woven into your daily life and business practices.
Design Your Calendar with Space:
Avoid back-to-back sessions. Build in transition time for grounding and recovery.
Use Somatic Check-Ins for Scheduling:
Before committing to new clients or projects, pause and notice how your body feels. Is there tension? Excitement? Use this as a guide for decision-making.
Develop End-of-Day Rituals:
Light a candle, journal, or engage in a calming activity to symbolically close your workday and shift back into personal mode.
Reflective Prompts: How Strong Are Your Boundaries?
- When was the last time I felt emotionally drained after a session? What might have caused that?
- How do I currently prepare for sessions? What might shift if I incorporated grounding rituals?
- Where in my business or personal life am I giving too much without replenishing?
Embodied boundaries are the key to sustainable coaching.
Holding space for others is sacred work—but you deserve to be held too. By integrating embodied boundary practices, you not only protect your energy but also enhance your presence and impact.
Sustainable coaching starts with you. 🌿
